How to Potty Train Bulldog Dog Potty - What to Do and Not to Do

Dog potty training is one of the most frustrating things a new dog owner will have to deal with when taking a new puppy home. This is especially difficult when your house is not puppy friendly at that stage.

There are basically 2 ways of potty training your new puppy. Paper training inside the house or outside training. Paper training inside is a good idea in winter times when it is cold and raining a lot.

Outside training however is the best way, because it is natural for your dog and he will relate better to it then the paper indoors. You might find it difficult to get your dog to relieve himself outside when he has been trained indoors. It might be confusing for him and also embarrassing for you when you have guests over.

Try to take him out as much as possible, preferably every hour or two. You should choose a specific spot where you would like your dog to relieve himself and always take him there. It is a good idea to have a specific spot. This will ensure that you do not need to run around the whole yard to clean up his poo.

In order for your dog not to get confused, use a potty training command whenever you want your dog to go. He will get used to it and he will shortly know what you expect from him when you use it.

Every time your dog relieves himself on your designated spot, you should praise him for doing a good job. Make sure that is the only time (when potty training) you praise him. He needs to start to understand that it is acceptable behaviour. You could even also give him a snack in the potty training period when he does it right.

It is also important to understand that your puppy will have accidents.

So you should make peace with that idea. Never get angry with him if he has accidents. Just speak to him in a firm tone and say something like (no). Your actions should not be the same as when he gets it right, but it should also not be the total opposite. He should get the idea that it is unacceptable without you screaming and shouting at him.

Do not rub his nose in the poo or pee, it will not help you in you training.
