House Training English Bulldog Puppies

Beginning the House Training Process

House training your Bulldog puppy should begin immediately upon arriving home and will continue for the first few weeks. It’s important to be patient and understanding with your puppy during this critical time.

This is when your puppy will learn what you are all about, strictly based on how you treat him. Bulldog puppies are very emotional, so scolding them will likely have a negative impact. This can easily create a situation where he will begin to associate you with being scolded, rather than understand it was his accident that caused the scolding, which can cause unnecessary fear and anxiety.

How to house train a bulldog

So it’s best to be prepared for a few accidents along the way with your new Bulldog puppy. By being prepared, you will know how to react and help yourself remain calm.

One thing you must keep in mind is that your puppy physically cannot hold it for more than 5 or 6 hours. So, if you are going to be gone for a majority of the day, you can only expect to find a messy box.

Crate Training Method

So how do you go about house training your new Bulldog puppy? Well, there are actually several methods that can be used for this, but as far as Bulldog puppies go, I have found that using a crate or porter works very well.

To use this method, you will need a small crate, just big enough for the puppy to stand up, turn around and lay down in (you can find a wide range of affordable crates at Pet Street Mall). The idea behind this is that most puppies will not relieve themselves in an area that they view as their bed.

By using a small crate, they must learn to use control because they will not want want to lay in a mess. This is really the best way for a Bulldog puppy to learn that he can wait until it is time to go outside.

Attempting to train a Bulldog puppy with a crate that he can freely move around in will make the training process difficult. A larger crate allows room for them to designate an area to use to relieve themselves.

Full-Time Crate

Unfortunately, when you house train your puppy using a porter or crate, this is where they will need to spend the vast majority of the time. This includes during the night, as well as any daytime hours that someone is not available to keep a close eye on the puppy.

However, your puppy should not be in the crate for extended periods of time, and it should never be used a punishment. Your puppy will need to be taken out of his crate as often as possible to spend time outside and playing.

If this simply is not possible, due to you being at work or school all day, you must take the puppy outside several times before you leave, and as soon as you arrive home. This is the quickest and easiest way to get him used to going in and out, as well as for him to recognize that outside is where you are to potty.

There is also an alternative to a porter or crate that can be used for any extended periods of time that you are away. It is called the Pet Palace and can be found on Amazon at a very reasonable price. It is a larger, disposable box that allows an area for him to go when you simply cannot be there to take him out.

Feeding Schedule

The schedule in which you feed and water your puppy is very critical to house training as well. This will have a direct impact on his need to go outside. Puppies will normally need to go out within 5 to 10 minutes of eating and no more than 15 minutes after drinking.

As mentioned before, Bulldog puppies will not be able to go for much more than 5 hours without going outside, so scheduling the times you give him his food and water is important. This should be done at least an hour before you leave to allow plenty of time to take him out before you go. Then feed and water the puppy again as soon as you get home (after he has been out first).

Take Your Time Outside

Try to allow yourself plenty of time for the first few days when you take your puppy outside. This allows him to play and explore for a few minutes before relieving himself, and will make outside time more enjoyable.

Also taking your puppy to the same spot each time will move things along quicker. By doing this he will become familiar with the surroundings and in a day or two will become less interested in exploring, and more likely to potty immediately.

More Crate Training Tips

  • Never put your Bulldog puppy in his crate without taking him outside first, even if it’s only been 10 minutes since he’s been out.
  • Always carry your Bulldog puppy outside immediately upon taking him out of the crate.
  • Praise, Praise, Praise! You must praise your Bulldog puppy each time he uses his outside spot. Shower him with affection and offer him a small treat with each ‘good job’.

House training your Bulldog puppy should not be a difficult process, but it will require a strict schedule and dedication on your part. Without dedication to his training, it will make the process longer and more difficult for everyone.
