How to Caring for Your Bulldogs Face

The care of your English Bulldogs' face is very important. Without the proper routine cleaning, wrinkles and fold can become irritated, and even infected.

Nose Wrinkle Or 'Rope'

The most critical area of a Bulldogs' face is the wrinkle, or rope, over their nose. Since their eyes tend to water and drain regularly, this area is prone to becoming moist, making a perfect area for bacteria to grow.

How to house train a bulldog

To keep their nose rope clean, we use a solution of 50/50 alcohol and vinegar. This is easy to mix by adding vinegar to a half of a bottle of alcohol. Every week, each Bulldog is wiped down thoroughly by dampening the corner of a wash cloth to rub once from one end of this fold to the other.

This is also good to wipe out their ears and other facial and neck folds, and no rinsing is needed. This is the easiest, and very effective way to keep your Bulldogs face nice and clean.

Tear Stains

There are many great products available, both online and in local retail stores, to clean and treat tear stains on your Bulldogs' face. We have tried a range of products, as well as our own homemade treatments.

We have found that a great solution for these stains is simply a mix of 50/50 water and peroxide. Using the same method above, rub the affected areas with the corner of a wash cloth dampened with the solution, allow to sit for a few minutes, and wipe away with water.

Chin Rashes

A few of our Bulldogs love to submerge their faces in the water bowl. In most cases, I am close and can wipe their faces dry. But there have been a few times that they develop a small red rash under their chin from the moisture.

When this happens, I simply rub their chins with Gold Bond Medicated Powder a few times a day. The powder draws the moisture away and heals the area very quickly.

Dry Or Irritated Eyes

This is an area that I don't have much experience with. Their have been only a few cases in which one of our girls had gotten dust in her eye and I simply treated it with regular Visene eye drops. Adding just a few drops, twice each day, relieved the irritation and completely eliminated the problem in just two days.

The treatments above may not be effective in all cases. They are simply ideas that have worked for us over the years. If your Bulldog is ill or experiencing severe symptoms, we recommend consulting your Veterinarian.
